Se vi dessi in dotazione un quaderno per schizzi ed un pennarello e vi lasciassi nel centro di Londra ad esempio, cosa riuscireste a fare?

A molti verrebbe il vuoto cosmico nel cervello perché la capacità di trasformare ciò che vediamo in un disegno non è così comune. Ci vuole fantasia, creatività ma soprattutto un’abilità di astrazione inusuale.

Many would come to the cosmic void in the brain because the ability to transform what we see in a drawing is not so common. It takes imagination, creativity and above all an unusual abstraction skills.

Non è il caso di James Hobbs, artista, giornalista e disegnatore della città.

Stazionando e osservando le città dai loro cuori pulsanti, James cattura l’anima di ciò che lo circonda decidendo in pochi secondi cosa merita di essere immortalato sui suoi fogli da disegno.

Le spesse linee nere del pennarello che imbrigliano l’energia del posto; guardando ai disegni si colgono emozioni che scaturiscono da disegni fatti velocemente, come fossero una reazione ad uno stimolo.

Standing and observing the cities from their beating hearts, James captures the soul of our surroundings in a few seconds, deciding what deserves to be immortalized on his drawing papers.

The energy of the moment is fooled by the thick black lines of the pen; looking at the designs we capture emotions arising from drawings made quickly, as if they were a reaction to a stimulus.

Alcuni di questi disegni vengono poi scannerizzati da James e colorati digitalmente, ma la maggior parte rimangono in bianco e nero.

I disegni di James li trovate in molti libri (Sketch Your World -2014- Dream, Draw, Design My Garden – 2015) dalle dimensioni più varie: si va da 30 cm fino ad 1 metro e oltre.

L’ultimo libro pubblicato da James si chiama Pen and Ink e raccoglie i disegni di 30 artisti in giro per il mondo. Se guardate bene i disegni e pensate a qualche anno indietro vi potrebbero sembrare anche familiari perché nel 2012 sono stati venduti da Ikea in occasione delle Olimpiadi di Londra.

Some of these drawings are then scanned and colored by James digitally, but most of them remain in black and white.

All designs have been collected in several books (Sketch Your World -2014- Dream, Draw, Design My Garden – 2015) from the most various sizes, ranging from 30 cm to 1 meter or more.

The last book published by James (available since 2016) is called Pen and Ink and collects drawings by 30 artists around the world.

If you look closely at the drawings and think about a few years back, they could also look familiar: oh yes because in 2012 the works of James were sold at Ikea during the London Olympics.
